Most people come to Afric
a for safari or to see primitive tribes. But, in the north of Ethiopia you will discover a completely different Africa with monuments that speak of an ancient civilization which can be compared with the Greek and Roman civilizations, 17th century castles where kings lived in excessive luxury, playing their political games and also innumerable rock hewn churches, hidden jewels in the rough landscape of Tigray.
As a travel agency we like to show you the beautiful sides of Ethiopia but during our 10 years stay in Ethiopia we have not been blind for the needs around us, caused by poverty and poor health care. We have been involved in different small scale development projects for which we feel still concerned since we came to Holland. Hereunder you can find links to some of these projects where nearly all income is used for those who need help instead of using the gifts for paying big salaries to the helpers, office rent or expensive cars . The helpers do their work voluntary or for a small salary paid from donations and they do their work with great enthusiasm.
Although it might not be known, Ethiopia gave the gift of coffee to this world! Ancient legend tells the story of Kaldi, an Ethiopian herder who lived in the Kaffa-region, believed to be the first to discover the mythical properties of coffee.
He was so amazed at the dancing of his goats after they had eaten some berries from nearby shrubs where he decided to try some of the ripe, red "Cherries" for himself. After eating the cherries he felt as energetic as his goats and he told his discoverie to the monks of a nearby monastry. When the monks started to eat the cherries they found out that they could pray for hours without getting tired.
Coffee quickly evolved into a ceremonial religious drink keeping the monks awake during their long hours of prayer.
