Read more...The tour starts from Addis Ababa via Kombolcha to small village Lalibela, where you find the 8th world wonder: 12 churches, which have been hewn 800 years a go from one big rock. It is still quite mysterious how men with simple instruments could make this great architectural construction? The construction of the churches have been made by the order of King Lalibela and is always told that the Engels have been stood on his side to finish up this great work within short period of time. The churches are under the ground invisible until you come closely.
Day 1: Addis Abeba: Sight seeing tour, visiting some important monuments and/or museum, enjoying sunset on Entoto Mountains with a splendid vieuw on Addis Abeba. O/n hotel Addis Abeba.
Day 2: Drive to Kombolcha, en route enjoy the magnificent vieuw on the Rift Valley by Ankober and have a picknick lunch there. Or visit the colourful Senbeti Market (only on Sunday). O/n hotel in Kombolcha
Day 3: Drive to Lalibela. En route visit Lake Hayk with its monastry on an island, its delightful surroundings and many birds. Depending on the time: In the mountains near Lalibela visit the Geneta Maryam rock hewn church (13th century) with beautiful wall paintings. O/n hotel in Lalibela
Day 4: Sight seeing of the rock hewn churches in Lalibela. These churches are masterpieces of art, one of the great wonders of the world, created by king Lalibela (13th century). Afternoon: free. O/n in Lalibela
Day 5: Drive to Mekele, the capital of Tigray. En route climbing of the mount Amba Alage to enjoy the magnificent vieuw and have picknick lunch. O/n hotel in Mekele.
Day 6: Free day in Mekele. Optional excursions: the impressive monument of the TPLF battle for freedom with its museum, museum of emperor Johannes IV, the market where also the salt-traders with their camels bring the salt from Danakil depression. O/n hotel in Mekele.
Day 7: Drive to Axum. En route there are many splendid vieuw points. En route visit to Yeha, the ruins of the oldest known capital of Ethiopia (800 - 500 B.C.). There is also a ruin of a Sabean temple from the same period. O/n hotel in Axum.
Day 8: Axum is a town full of impressive monuments which testify of the rich and glorious past of the mighty Kingdom of Axum (1 - 700 A.D.). In the morning sight seeing of the graves of Kaleb and Gebre Maskal. Those who like walking can go back by foot via a track passing the Abba Liqanos monastry with excellent vieuws on the surrounding countryside. Afternoon: sight seeing of the famous stelae and tombs, St.Mary of Zion churches and museum. O/n hotel in Axum.
Day 9: Morning: free to discover more of the treasures of Axum.
Afternoon: drive to Shire. En route visit the ruins of the Palace of Dongour (6th or 7th century A.D.),
Lion of Gobedra (rock painting) and the ancient quarries where the Stealle were cut out from the rocks. O/n hotel in Shire.
Day 10: Drive to Debark. First breakfast and coffee ceremony in the house of a family in Shire.
The route is very scenic with spectacular, impressive vieuws on the Semien Mountains, described as "the most marvellous of all Abyssinian landscapes". O/n hotel in Debark.
Day 11: Half day trek in the Semien Mountains to enjoy more of its dramatic beauty. Picknick on a nice vieuw point. Afternoon: drive to Gondar O/n hotel in Gondar.
Day 12: Sight seeing of the famous castles of King Fasiladas (17th century) and Debre berhan Selassie Church with its 1000 angels on the ceiling and beautiful wall paintings. Afternoon free. O/n hotel in Gondar
Day 13: Morning: sight seeing of King Fasiladas bath which also today is used for the Timkat feast and is situated on a beautiful shady spot. Afternoon: drive to Bah Dar. En route: visit local people in their houses and/or bird watching in the swamp where the Nile floates out from Lake Tana. O/n hotel in Bah Dar.
Day 14: Morning: boat trip on Lake Tana and visit of two or three of the island with their ages old monastries. Afternoon: free. Optional excursions: cycle tour along the Nile to Haile Selassie's palace with a beautiful vieuw on the surroundings or to Weyto village to see how the "Tankwa's (papyrus boats) are made. Relaxing by the lake or renting a surf board is also possible. O/n in Bah Dar
Day 15: Early trip to the Nile falls after which we drive directly to Debre Markos. O/n hotel in Debre Markos
Day 16: Drive to Addis Abeba, passing the spectacular Nile Gorge which can be compared with the Grand Canyon. Optional: visit Debre Libanos monastry situated on an impressive vieuw point. O/n hotel in Addis Abeba.
Day 17: Last day in Addis Abeba. Wash away the dust in a swimming pool, shopping in Merkato
-the biggest open air market of Africa- and farewell dinner.
