More about whale shark snorkeling/diving
Whales sharks are, easily put, a shark in the size of a whale and so the biggest fish in the world. They are up to 8 meters tall 1 meter in width. Their remarkable migration pattern still baffles marine scientist from all over the world. From November until February, Djibouti is one of the easiest places to observe and swim with whale sharks, as they come to feed on the high concentrations of plankton around the beaches. Their amiable and playful nature makes swimming with them an unforgettable experience.
Djibouti is known for its strong currents coming in from Yemen and hitting the Red Sea, which can greatly impact the quality of visibility. However it remains possible to experience optimal visibility as you dive or snorkel next to them, which happens to most of travelers. We advice to make sure to have appropriate licenses or certificates present when scuba diving with the whales.
Day 3: Visit Lac Assal and Lac Abbeh
After breakfast you will drive to Lac Assal, and visit the lowest point in Africa. Lac Assal or Bahr al Assal in Arabic (the sea of honey, located 153m above sea level), is based 107 km from Djibouti city. En route, you will stop and witness scenic views over the lake’s huge canyon, part of the great Danakil Depression.
Later, after lunch, you will drive to Lac Abbeh. The land and surroundings are exceptional, as the soil boils and steams hot air, also known as ‘chimneys’. You will explore the area until sunset. Tonight, you will be sleeping under the stars.
Day 4: Visit around Lake Abbeh and flight back home
You will wake up with the rising sun, what an amazing way to start the day! Early morning you drive off to one of the small hotsprings around Lac Abbeh, where you can spot pink flamingos gathering around the lake. After the morning spent in Lac Abbeh, you’ll drive back in the direction of Djibouti city. You’ll stop in the small city of Dikhil, where you’ll have lunch in La Palmeraie.
Back in Djibouti city, your transfer to the airport will be at 4:00 pm. Around 7:00 pm you’ll be flying back to Addis Ababa, enjoying Djibouti once more from the sky.
